PROJECT

Ell Causeway Watermain

LOCATION
DAMPIER, WA

The Brief

KAW Engineering required assistance with the replacement of a liner located at East Intercourse Island in Dampier, WA. The proposed solution was to utilise a winch to pull the liner through the existing, no longer fit for purpose watermain.

The scope of work included:

  • Determination of maximum winching force

  • Sizing winch and restraints

  • Designing winch wire diverting structures.

Our Approach

Our approach was based on using best practice standards and applying them to site conditions. Friction factors were determined or provided by clients and safety factors were applied in accordance with international standards. The winch was sized based on the above factors and capacity was limited to ensure overload was not possible. A load test was recommended to ensure that winch restrain were satisfactory for use with personnel in close proximity.

Winch diverting structures were designed with the intent ofminimising interaction with the existing clients assets.

The Results

Delivered on time & within scope

The liner was installed safely without incident.

Improved Safety

Improved safety due to robust engineering and accurate sizing of winch wire and test specifications

"Strake Engineering were able to leverage their extensive experience in complex engineering to rapidly assess and solve dynamic winching loads to ensure that we could re-start our project and execute a 1st of kind liner pull safely and with minimal interruption to existing service. Their team responded to the challenges of our site and our client and delivered exceptional and dynamic results."
