PROJECT

Wharf dogbone structure transportation

CLIENT
LOCATION
NEWCASTLE, NSW

The Brief

CIVMEC Construction Engineering required assistance to develop a solution for the safe mobilisation, storage and transportation of a 220t load within a short two-week turnaround time. Strake Engineering was engaged by Civmec in New South Wales to design and create a dogbone structure for transportation of the 220t structure.

The scope of work included:

  • Designing the jacking solution to transfer the load from fabrication supports to self-propelled modular transporter (SPMT) trestle supports. This included defining the jack specification, local strengthening requirements and sequencing characteristics

  • Designing SPMT support trestles to reinforce and secure the load during transport

  • Designing temporary support structures for the dogbone structure prior to final transportation to site

  • Assessing European designed and fabricated lifting devices to ensure they complied with Australian standards

  • Verifying all design elements using Finite Element Analysis (FEA)

Our Approach

To overcome the two-week delivery time constraint, we approached and liaised with local resources to procure suitable products and proprietary items required to complete the work.

The project involved three transport arrangements with varying loading conditions. We collaborated with transport contractors and other stakeholders, performing regular dimensional and clearance checks during all stages of the procedure to ensure our solution was suitable for all phases of the project.

Our solution was easy to fabricate and install, with our primary focus on safe installation and transport of the structure.

The Results

Delivered on time & within scope

Safely delivered all scope items and requirements within the project schedule

Improved Safety

Improved safety of the project through correctly specifying proprietary equipment required

Reduced Costs

Further reduced overall cost of the project by creating a simplified two jack solution
